I thought I had provided some information about H G Wells' use of the Woking landscape in his great SF novel 'The War of the Worlds'. I looked back through all the blogging I have produced so far and I found pictures of the structures installed in central Woking commemorating TWOTW and a brief caption but nothing else about TWOTW. If I have repeated myself I am sorry but I am sure I have not.
I decided to have a walk through Horsell Common and have a look again at 'The Sandpits'. I was out for an hour and three quarters and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have to confess though to being a bit sore in the legs. I find the sandpits fascinating given that they/it are/is a long way from any sea. I thought the action of the sea turned stones into sand and that sea would be necessary to produce sand. I did live next to Lake Taupo and there is sand around the lake which is probably caused by the movement of the water (not tidal though). Maybe there was a lake in Horsell Common at some stage, but how come the sand has stayed? It is just one of the things in life I will have to accept.
Woking has some outdoor 'pleasures'. The Horsell Common, which is full of mostly some sort of pine trees I think. I always thought a common was supposed to be a grassy space in the middle of a village or town where cricket was played but it seems I was wrong! Also, the canal with the towpath which is quite extensive. There are also a number of outlying villages and countryside which are great to explore. So anyone who wishes to bag Woking needs to speak to me first!
